Important Facts about Eye Donation
What is the role of Eye Bank?
Eye Banks Collect eyes from donors after death and then
arrange for their scientific processing, storage and use.
What is cornea?
Cornea is the glass like transparent covering in the front
part of the eye ball.
What causes corneal damage?
Infections injuries, from objects and chemicals,
malnutrition, degenerations, dystrophies and
developmental defects are among the causes of the corneal
damages.
Who can donate cornea?
Anyone of any age group can donate eyes. Hypertension,
diabetic, cataract surgeries and use of spectacles or contact
lance are not the barrier for eye donation.
How many blind people can be benefited by one donor?
One eye donor can give gift of sight to more than two blind
persons.
How longer death can eyes be removed?
Eyes can be removed as early as possible preferably within
6-8 hour after death.
Does eye donation delay cremation?
No removal of eyes after death takes only 10- 15 minutes.
Does removal of eyes cause disfigurement?
There is no disfigurement, plastic eye shells are put into
give a normal cosmetic appearance.
What is the procedure of Corneal Graing?
Donor eyes are scientifically preserved and after
evaluation used by expert surgeons usually within 48
hours. Those who have lost their eyesight because of
damage of cornea can hope for the restoration of sight
through corneal grafting. Damaged cornea from the
patient’s eye is removed and replaced by the healthy
cornea from the donor eye.
